The Ibagu-gil area in Choryang, Dong-gu, Busan, known as a theme street that promotes Busan's history and culture, will be newly transformed.

Ibagugil is a place that retains the appearance of Busan in the 1950s and 60s, when it was the living area of evacuees after liberation, and the 1970s and 80s, when it was in the industrial revival period, and is 1.5 kilometers long and is famous for its beautiful scenery suitable for viewing Busan Port. First of all, an inclined elevator will be installed instead of the 168-step monorail in Choryang, which has been a problem due to frequent breakdowns.

According to the Dong-gu Office of Busan City, the inclined elevator next to the 168 steps of Choryang will be operational from the 11th of next month, it was announced on the 27th. A budget of 23 billion won, including special grants and equipment, was invested in the construction of the elevator, which runs about 60 meters next to the stairs.

The elevator, named 'Choryang 168 Gongdo' through a public contest, can carry about 12 people, making it more efficient than the monorail, which has a capacity of eight people, and is expected to solve the inconvenience of residents and tourists by making less noise and operating at night.

The Ibagu Platform, a youth entrepreneurship space, will also open at the same time as the elevator. It is a space that renovates a vacant urban regeneration base facility around the 168 steps of Choryang and rents it out to young people in their 20s and 30s at a low cost. Dong-gu Office completed the renovation with a municipal investment of 900 million won, and 300 million won will be invested in operating costs of 1 billion won for three years.

The young people will operate different cafes, restaurants, and workshops on the Ibagu platform, which is divided into eight spaces, and it is expected to become a new attraction on Ibagu-gil.

“Even before COVID-19, it was estimated that about 1,300 to 1,500 people used the monorail per day,” said an official from Dong-gu Office. ”We expect the elevator to be used by more residents and tourists.”
