Gyeongju Gyochon Village

Gyochon Village, with its charming hanok houses lined up along quaint stone-walled streets, is located in the heart of Gyeongju. The history of Gyochon Village dates back to the Silla Dynasty. In 682 (the second year of the reign of King Silla), Korea's first national university, the Gukha, was established here. Gukha led to Hyanghak in the Goryeo Dynasty and Hyanggyo in the Joseon Dynasty, and continues to play a central role in Gyochon Village to this day.

The name "Gyochon" means "a village with a Hyanggyo (conventional school)." Hyanggyo, located at the very back of the village, is a place of education that has nurtured the nation's talents for over 682 years since the National Academy was established in 1,300. Daeseongjeon, designated Treasure No. 1727, Myeongryundang Hall and the lecture hall have been preserved in their original form.

It continues to be an educational space through traditional cultural experience programs such as traditional Korean music and classical dance performances, as well as programs where you can experience traditional culture such as a Hyanggyo Stay. The traditional wedding ceremony held every Saturday and Sunday at 3pm is one of the highlights of Gyochon Village that you should not miss.

Next to the Hyanggyo School is the Old House of the Choi Clan in Gyeongju-gyo-dong, Important Folk Cultural Asset No. 27. It was the head family home of the Gyeongju Choi Clan, known as Manseokgeun, and was built around 1700, marking a period of more than 300 years. The low main gate exudes a sense of modest style, in contrast to its reputation as the home of a wealthy Joseon Dynasty king. Once inside the main gate, you will be greeted by an elegant sarangchae.
