Overview

A stone fortress built in the early 5th century during the Silla period

Myeonghalsanseong Fortress, Historic Site No. 47, is located near the Bomun Tourist Complex lined with luxury hotels and is known as a Silla mountain fortress built on the peak of Myeonghalsan Mountain east of Gyeongju city. The exact date of construction is unknown, but according to the "Samguk Sagi," there is a record of Japanese pirates attacking Myeonghalsan Fortress in the 4th year of King Silseong of Silla (405), so it is assumed that the fortress was built before that time.

Myeonghalsanseong Fortress was originally built as an earthen fortress, but is believed to have been rebuilt as a stone fortress around the time of King Jinheung's reign. The construction date of the stone fortress can be estimated from the Myeonghalsanseong Stone Monument, made in the 12th year of King Jinheung's reign (551), which was discovered inside the fortress.

The castle's construction also shows the stone-laying method used in the early Silla period, which used natural stones as they were. Records indicate that the castle was attacked by Japanese pirates in the 15th year of King Nulji's reign (431), which shows that it served as an important military base for protecting Silla's capital, Wolseong, along with Seondosanseong and Namsanseong.

In the 16th year of the reign of Queen Seondeok (647), Sangdaedeung (the equivalent of the Prime Minister), Bidam and Yeomjong, launched a rebellion here, but it was put down by General Kim Yu-shin. Today, most of the walls have collapsed, leaving only traces of the past here and there, but some remains of the earthen and stone fortresses can still be seen.
