The tourism industry in Bugok-myeon Hot Spring District in Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam, which was once a representative tourist destination in Korea, is showing signs of recovery thanks to the efforts of the county and the hot spring industry, which was hit by the closure of Bugok Hawaii and the novel coronavirus.

According to Changnyeong-gun on Wednesday, 2.83 million tourists visited Bugok Hot Springs last year, a significant increase from 2020, when the number dropped to 2.42 million due to COVID-19.

The number of tourists dropped below 3 million for the first time in 2018, the year after the closure of Bugok Hawaii, the largest tourist destination in the Yeongnam region, to 2.8 million, and then dropped to 2.4 to 2.6 million by 2022 due to COVID-19. In 2023, 2.91 million people visited, and last year, 2.83 million people enjoyed hot springs in Changnyeong.

Despite the slight drop in tourist numbers last year, the military attributed the temporary drop to higher-than-normal summer temperatures.

The military expects more than 3 million tourists to visit again this year.

The goal is achievable, the military said, thanks to the city's designation as Korea's first representative hot spring city in 2023 and the loess road, light street, toddler park, and visits by training teams.

In addition, the remodeling of family baths by hot spring and lodging companies and the recent opening of the Changnyeong-Milyang section of the Hamyang-Ulsan Expressway are expected to be positive factors in attracting tourists.

Bugok Oncheon is a hot spring district concentrated within a 1-kilometer radius from Bugok-myeon Office toward Bugok Bus Terminal.

It boasts alkaline sulfur hot spring water at 78 degrees Celsius that can boil eggs.

There are a total of 24 lodging and hot spring establishments (3 are closed), each with a family bath and some with a bathhouse concept.

There are 1,355 guest rooms (family baths) in operation. On weekends, from Friday to Sunday, it is very popular with a reservation rate of over 90%.

The recent trend of Bugok Hot Spring tourists has been characterized by a decrease in group tours, which used to come to Changnyeong on tour buses, and an increase in family tourists.

“We are grateful to tourists from various regions such as Gyeongnam, Daegu, and Busan who have visited Bugok Hot Springs,” said Son Nak-in, ”and we will continue to strive to help more people relieve their fatigue in Changnyeong.”

The 30th Bugok Hot Spring Festival, where visitors can experience hot springs, will be held from March 28 to 30 in Bugok Hot Spring District.
